The Florida Room
The Florida Room is a little slice of heaven in north Portland…once you get past envisioning the constantly strobing dots of colored light as rifle sights trained on your beloved’s forehead! Its all part of the ambiance, I guess.
Anyhoo, we unabashedly loved the Florida Room and its vibe. Inside is dark and funky with sparkly booths in front, a few tables strewn about and a private-ish backroom with a pool table. The entire front and side of the building are encased by a sturdy, covered patio area – plenty of outdoor seating available for all types of weather.
8 taps, mostly craft with 1 Pabst, 1 cider, 1 rose wine. For eats there is plenty of yummy stuff available including Frito pie made with the house vegan chili, a cheap (in price, not in quality) tasty burger and fat, filling street tacos. Great deals on food and drinks for happy hour with plenty of veg options. We will overlook the absence of poppers because, hey, everyone has room to improve!
Rachel runs the place and keeps things humming along efficiently while Kyle behind the bar provides a Zen-like presence and killer cocktails. The enormous undersea mural, the collection of oddities in the front window and graffiti on the high ceiling in the bathroom (and only on the ceiling – how did it get there???) add to the quirky ambiance.
I was beyond delighted to find a copy of The Handbook for the Recently Deceased in the vending machine – Beetlejuice fans rejoice! I had to have it, but the machine ate the money from my card. Luckily my honey came through with cash so that little gem could come home with us. Hopefully we won’t need it anytime soon, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared!
