Marie’s

We weren’t planning to stop at Marie’s, but the deliciously dark interior sucked us right in on our way to Slim’s. Little did we know, that was just the beginning because this crazy place is actually three bars in one!

Walk into Marie’s and you find a somewhat standard, dark, and divey space. Wander into the next room and you are transported to a run-down 1970s era nightclub crossed with a midwestern church basement: Pool table off to the side, board games on offer and a huge central area dominated by enormous plush, peach-colored booths along one wall with a row of matching side chairs. At the center is a spotlighted ping pong table. They actually host ping pong tournaments here M, W, F – I’ve gotta come back to see this spot in action!

Amble on out back and you have a pair of covered areas reminiscent of Eric Forman’s basement before the sky opens up to reveal a bona fide hidden gem of a garden. Not even kidding – this outdoor space is magnificent! Tables and chairs scattered throughout the wild, but obviously well-tended greenery afford privacy and fresh air. Or a place to get your nicotine fix, your choice.

Don’t miss the beer-can-shrouded tree and the secluded hammock. 5 taps, 1 cider and a full bar tended by John on the day we visited. Food menu changes and appears to come online only after 5.

Co-Conspirator’s Note (Arthur): This particular dive bar is a lesson in being open minded and non-judgmental. Had we not followed our curiosity and explored the unassuming (slightly scary-looking?) entrance to Marie’s, we would have totally missed out on one of the most wonderful surprises in St. Johns.
